Four Signs That Bedbugs Are Present

No household pest is pleasant but many people find bedbugs particularly distressing. Bedbugs are small, oval brown insects that live on furniture or bedding and feed on the blood of humans or animals. This might sound alarming but don’t worry, bedbugs aren’t dangerous, but they can cause itchy bites and leave dirt on your bedding.

Bedbugs are not a sign that your home is dirty and they can be found just as easily in a clean, spotless home. However, it is important to get rid of an infestation as soon as possible, so if you suspect this pest in your home, see below for four signs that bedbugs are present.

Bite marks

Bedbugs are mainly active at night so you may notice bite marks on any area of exposed skin in the morning. Unlike flea bites which are usually around the ankles, bedbug bites can appear anywhere that’s exposed. Bites are small, red and itchy and they usually appear in a line or cluster.

A musty smell

Bedbugs have scent glands that produce a telltale musty odour. If you smell a musty smell around your bedding or furniture (and have ruled out other possible causes like damp) this is a sign that bedbugs might be present.

Small brown spots on bedding

You may notice small brown spots or smears on bedding or furniture. This is bedbug poo (unpleasant to think about, we know!). Again, bedbugs are harmless and this isn’t anything to worry about, but naturally you’ll want to deal with the issue as soon as possible. Wash any affected bedding or furnishings on a hot wash (60 degrees) then tumble dry for at least 30 minutes.

Small spots of blood

As well as small brown spots, you may notice dark red/brown spots on your sheets or pillowcases. This is a sign that bedbugs have been feeding in the night, or that they’ve been squashed in your sleep. It’s very likely that you’ll have small bite marks too.
